Halloween Costumes
by Teresa O'neil

As an adult, you can have just as much fun wearing a costume as you did when you were a kid. Take this opportunity to show fellow partygoers how bewitchingly clever you are, not how frighteningly unimaginative you've become with age. You'll probably wear this getup just once, so why spend a bundle? Here are some ideas for putting together a smashing outfit for about $10.

Come October, thrift stores start setting out costumes that other ingenious people made last year. If none of these express your alter ego, flex some creative muscle and put one together yourself. Outdated clothing is plentiful in most thrift stores and is ideal for masquerading. Funky shoes are another sure bet. Gather hats, scarves and props for just a few bucks. After you've pulled together your basic attire, use a glue gun to add buttons, ribbon, sequins and the like to complete the theme.

And if your imagination is lacking, many thrift stores also carry uniforms like hospital scrubs, Army fatigues and camouflage jackets.

Thrift store shopping tips: Larger thrift stores whose proceeds go to various charities are generally less expensive and have a wider selection than smaller, privately owned consignment shops.

  • Start looking now since you may not find what you want on the first visit.
  • Call ahead to find out if and when the store runs weekly specials.
  • Wash everything before wearing.
  • And for the kids....
